Microsoft is buying the domain name domain purchase service provider domain.com.
The acquisition is worth $1.9 billion.
The company has bought Domain Management Solutions from CNET, and acquired it in August, according to people familiar with the matter.
The domain name buy has been in the works for some time, but the acquisition is a major milestone, said two people familiar the transaction, who asked not to be identified discussing the internal deliberations.
Microsoft will also continue to provide support to Domain Management Systems.
The Domain Management Services were developed by Domain Systems and are based on the technology used in the Windows operating system, the people said.
They declined to elaborate on the acquisition, citing the company’s nondisclosure agreement with Domain Systems.
The companies also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Domain Management Solutions was created in 2008, and has had a long history of delivering products and services to customers.
The service is used by many large organizations, from major banks to media companies, government agencies and military.
Domain names are used to describe domain and other data.
Domain names are also used by companies to identify a site or application.
Domain name purchases are typically the result of mergers and acquisitions.
The company purchased Domain Management solutions in the fourth quarter of last year.
